Happiness Boosters


There have been numerous studies on positive psychology and happiness.  There is definitely a happiness set-point that you are born with, but there are other things you can do to boost your feelings of happiness. Some people are naturally happy, while others have to work at it a little bit more. My daughter has a very high happiness set point. Since the day she was born, she just radiates joy and happiness. She can create joy from a speck of dust. It truly amazes me at times. There are, however, many people in these uncertain times that have lost the happy feeling. Because of circumstances and environment, sprinkled with their natural happiness set point, individuals are struggling to feel joy and happiness. I am an eternal optimist by nature, so I tend to believe you create your own joy. The environment does not take away your power and ability to create your best life. Individuals who live very simple and primitive lifestyles are sometimes the happiest people you will ever encounter. I have created a happiness factor survey that I would love for you to answer. It will help me get a feel for what you are struggling with and how I can offer advice. In the meantime, there are some happiness boosters that you can apply to your life today (Courtesy of Caroline Miller’s book). These activities will boost your happiness and bring you more joy.

1. Journal

    It has been documented that just the act of journaling will bring about more happiness in your life. By putting thought to paper, it creates a safe outlet for you and your feelings. There is no specific format to this, it is just a matter of creating some consistency. What I would like from each of you is to give this a try for two solid weeks. Commit to keeping a journal and writing down experiences, feelings, thoughts, ideas, visions, or all of the above. See how you feel after a couple of weeks.

2. Exercise

    Exercise has also been documented over and over when it comes to creating a “natural high.” Some people thought this was just a saying, but there is scientific proof that exercise creates feelings of happiness and joy. It boost endorphins throughout your body and you naturally feel better. So, for this week try to sweat a little and get engaged in exercise that pushes you physically. Do this regularly and see how your mood changes. I know personally when I do not carve out time for exercise, I am a bit grumpier than usual.

3. Meditate

    Praying is when you talk to God. Meditation is when God talks to you. Because of our hectic lifestyles and the stressors being thrown our way, it is more important than ever to engage in some form of meditation. Instead of getting caught up in having to do it a certain way for a certain amount of time, just do what works for you. Listen to a meditation CD. Close your eyes and just be quiet for a couple of minutes. Go for a walk and say your affirmations or talk with God. Just implement some time to quiet your mind and get away from all the noise and distractions.
